Have you ever planned out a time schedule for your day and suddenly an expected visitor shows up, keeps you occupied for hours, your schedule is disrupted and you are lagging behind, trying to catch up on getting things done?. It happens especially in certain parts of the world where giving notice of visits is seen as not being necessary.
There is no area of your life in which self-discipline is more important than in the way you manage your time. Time management is so crucial that it determines the quality of your life. Peter Drucker said, ‘you cannot manage time, you can only manage yourself.’
Time management in essence is really life management because time is life. It is the management of one’s self, rather than of time and circumstances.
Two Crucial Things to Note about Time
- Time is perishable. Once it is lost, it is gone. It cannot be recovered or stored. You cannot save time. You can only spend it differently.
- Time is indispensable. Every vision, attainment, accomplishment, or task of any kind requires time.
Three Guidelines on How to Manage Your Time.
- Relocate your time usage from areas of low value to areas of high value. This requires self-discipline.
- Have control over the sequence of your day. Choose what to do first, second or not to do at all. The freedom to choose is yours. Don’t let others dictate the pace of your day by keeping you occupied with things that add no direct value to your goals.
- Avoid procrastination and delay. This is a huge factor that has held people back from attaining great success. Procrastination is a thief of vision.
