The Ladder to Success
Success Series (1)
Success means different things to different people. For a student, success may be defined by academic achievements; for someone in career, success may be defined by the frequency of his promotion; a businessman may define his success by the size of his bank account at the end of each sales day while for others success could mean living a contented life. What does success mean to you?
When you have defined what success means to you, it helps you to see the things you should be doing more of or less of to arrive at your definition of success.
We’ll start this series by looking at hindrances to success and thereafter, we’ll look at boosters of success.
Three Hindrances to Success
- Excuses
It is often said that excuses don’t build bridges. If you want something done, then get up and do it. There will always be a thousand reasons why something cannot be done but if you find one reason why it can be done, then by all means do it. Your one reason can be the light at the end of the tunnel that gives clarity and vision to all.
- Poor Drive
It takes a push to move something forward. Success must be self-driven. The inert desire for success must come from within you. This generates the drive to overcome all obstacles and stay on track. To build your inner drive, surround yourself with people who stimulate your thinking and encourage you by telling you, you can make it. Run away from people who tear down your vision and reduce your drive.
- Lack of self-discipline
An American writer, Elbert Hubbard defined self-discipline as the ability to do what you should do when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not. He went further to explain that without self-discipline, none of the other success principles will work. However, with self-discipline, they will all work. The ability to delay gratification, deny yourself of certain things and gain mastery over your emotions and appetites are all forms of self-discipline. The journey of success is best founded on long-term perspectives, whether in business, marriage, work, finance, etc and this requires self-discipline.
Finally, as a Christian, your success is made complete in Christ Jesus.
Stay blessed and keep achieving.
