Finding that ‘special someone’
Adam woke up from his sleep and said, ‘this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman.’ Because she was taken out of Man.’ Genesis 2:23. He knew it as soon as he saw her. I’ll be sharing a few tips to go by, for those who are concerned about finding the right person for marraige.
- If you are interested in a spiritual person, look for him or her wherever the Spirit of God is. This simply means, be in the company of believers. You must equally be spiritually-minded. Growing up as a young person, I noticed the character of one of our family tenants. He was a young man who brought home different ladies all the time. This often led to quarrels and disagreements when the ladies met at his place. It was appalling. Eventually, he got married to a beautiful young lady. Every morning, she would sit outside in the lobby and wave at all the passersby the whole day. She became actively involved in gossip and other vices. My thoughts back then were that this young man ended up with the wrong person, based on his lifestyle and antecedents as a bachelor. The marriage was short-lived.
- Be focused on God’s kingdom. In God’s scheme of things, when we focus on his kingdom and on him, he brings all other incentives as blessings to us. This includes a good life partner. Focus on God and he will bring the right person to you. Therefore take no thought saying, what shall we eat? Or what shall we drink? Or wherewithal shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek: for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:31-33.
- Do not be unequally yoked with Unbelievers. As Children of God, God expressively tells us ‘not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? Corinthians 6:14. Don’t marry him or her with the hope of changing the person. It doesn’t work. You may end up being the one in need of rescue or change. Those who find it hard to obey God’s explicit instructions, often end up with a hard life.
- Pray for Divine Guidance. God’s ways are higher than our ways and his thoughts are equally higher than our thoughts. In finding the right person for marriage, the need for prayer for divine guidance cannot be over-emphasized. When Abraham’s servant went to find a wife for Isaac, he prayed a simple prayer, and Rebekah showed up before he was done speaking. Genesis 24:12-15
Benefits of aligning with God’s word in finding that ‘Special Person’.
- You will both have a common interest in God. A man and a woman who find each other while aligning to God’s instruction have the advantage of sharing a common interest in God. They will push each other up in the pursuit of God.
- It’s easier to work in agreement. When both are aligned and in agreement with God’s words, it’s easier to work in agreement over biblical principles that guard Christian courtship and marriage. These include principles such as purity in courtship, submission, and love in marriage.
Stay blessed.
