Global Leadership and Perspective- Perseverance
Every leader needs the quality of perseverance.
CASE STUDY- THE LIFE OF TYLER PERRY
Tyler Perry was born into a home scarred by abuse.
He dropped out of school and took many menial jobs until he was inspired by Oprah to write down his daily experiences, which he did. These experiences evolved into creative pieces of work.
He moved to Atlanta and finished working on his piece. He took many jobs and was able to save up some money.
Gathering his savings in 1992 he rented out Atlanta’s 14th Street playhouse and mounted his own production house where he produced his first play titled ” Now I’ve been changed” with him as the producer, director, promoter, and star.
At first, it was a disaster but he kept going. Every time he went on to rehearse he would lose a job. He became discouraged and nearly broke.
At a point, he was homeless, couldn’t afford a meal, and was jumping from one cheap hotel to the other.
He was convinced by his mom to give up his theatrical quest but he didn’t.
Tyler Perry is a successful filmmaker today because he didn’t give up.
In 1998, Tyler rented Atlanta’s House of blues for one final try at theatrical success.
While at the theater, the heat went out. He was so discouraged and was going to throw in the towel when he looked out the window and saw a block line of people waiting to watch the show. The show sold out eight times and from there he went on to a much larger fox theater. Tyler has since then gone on to produce incredible movies that had and still have massive success.
Notice that the setback at Atlanta’s house of blues wasn’t Tyler’s first.
He had experienced setbacks even before then and had pushed forward anyway.
Imagine if Tyler had given up the first time he experienced a setback, or when he was homeless, hungry, and broke, would he have recorded his first success story he had at Atlanta’s house of blues and would he have gone on to be one of the best producers today?
Tyler understood the power of perseverance.
He had continued despite the difficulties, oppositions, and failure. He knew what he wanted to achieve and he had put more effort every time.
His perseverance was rewarded with success after many efforts.
Perseverance is required to perfect just about any skill and to succeed at just any quest.
To preserve and succeed, we have to jettison fear, doubt, and self-pity.
Tyler Perry’s life story is just a perfect example of what the reward of perseverance is.
Let us as individuals take a few or more lessons from this and keep on at our various endeavors God guiding us.
People who give up because they failed do not always move forward and can’t tell what could have been.
