As a classroom teacher, I have noticed that creating a safe classroom environment for students can make them participate more effectively in the learning process than having a tense environment. Both have a resultant effect on the outcome of the student’s academic performance.
A safe and conducive environment will create room for the teachers and the students to communicate effectively in imparting or conveying the right information or knowledge.
Communication in this context is a two-way process I.e. sending and receiving of messages. Also, this can be described as the process where people exchange thoughts or ideas with one another.
The importance of establishing good communication at a young age is critical in a child’s development and future learning.
The communication skills that students learn at school are fully transferable and essential across all aspects of life. Again, it has been proven that supportive teacher-student relationships have a positive bearing or impact on class participation, engagement, and ultimately a student’s achievements.
Poor communication on the other side is one of the reasons why students lack motivation, perform badly, and consequently drop out of school. According to many studies, the success of students has a functional relationship to effective communication with their teachers.
So, effective communication can build and foster a safe learning environment where students can thrive, prosper and learn.
