Years back, I had a boss who was very boisterous at the office. He cracked jokes and laughed heartily at other people’s jokes. He was fun to be with and had lots of friends at work.
On a particular day, his niece that lived with him came to see him in the office. Unfortunately, he had stepped out. So, I asked her to wait and chatted with her to make her feel at home. Without any negative thoughts, I said to her, your uncle is such a lively man, am sure he makes you laugh so much at home.
I remember the look of surprise on her face. No, she said, my uncle, is very quiet. He eats his food, reads his newspaper, and goes to bed. He doesn’t talk at all, not even with my aunty.
Though several years have passed, the memory of that discussion still lingers in my mind. Communication is very vital for a healthy marriage. You may not enjoy your marriage if you and your spouse don’t know how to communicate effectively.
Communication is passing across news, information, or feelings to somebody else. Effective communication is when the information has been well received and understood.
When there is a bridge in communication, lack of understanding, frustration, and more will follow. A two-way process is useful for effective communication, – talking and listening. This helps with a maximum understanding of the message that is being passed.
