Becoming an Intentional Learner 1
While in the university, I was in a cab and we drove past one of the major schools in town. Everywhere was rowdy. Students were running up and down the road. I asked the driver, what is going on? To my surprise, he said they were writing JAMB.
It took my mind back to when we wrote JAMB. We all sat spaced out, no calculator, no movement, the examiners staring hard at us until we have submitted our papers and stepped out of the hall.
So, you can imagine my shock when I heard they were writing JAMB and half of the students were running around with scripts outside (Then the computer-based examination had not started).
Recently, I heard the story of an elderly man who took his daughter to register for JAMB at a NIN center. Right there, he negotiated with the owner of the center for someone who will write the exam for her at a fee. She will only thumb-print during the finger capturing while the imposter will capture the remaining fingers.
This singular act of parental failure will completely destroy any fabric of confidence his daughter had in her capabilities to write any exams successfully by herself. Of course, the future repercussions are there even when she gets the admission.
A classmate of mine suffered a terrible fate when she was rusticated after our final year in the university for fake jamb results. She had one of the highest scores in Jamb back then, although this did not reflect in her academic performance in school.
Learning as an intentional act is a plus. It can be mastered. You can excel, gain more depth and understanding the moment you master the act of international learning.
