Personal Grooming in the Workplace 2 (Success in Career Series)
Does it matter how I look?
Your outward appearance is part of your communication in the workplace. Personal grooming is how you present yourself on a daily basis. Dressing smartly, having good personal hygiene, and carrying yourself well are all part of making a strong work and professional impression.
On a daily basis, you are constantly being evaluated by colleagues, employers, and other people around you. Your appearance at work will send a message about how coordinated you are, how you view your work environment, and how much respect you have for yourself and your work. Making a few adjustments can go a long way to creating more opportunities for you within the organization.
In series one, we addressed the following;
-Dress the part.
This is wearing the appropriate clothing for your industry. Research the dress code in your workplace and make sure you fit in while maintaining your individuality. You cannot wear jeans and sneakers if the corporate dress code is a suit and a tie.
-Neat and Tidy
Be sure that your outfit is clean, dry, and well-ironed. Don’t rush out in wrinkled clothes.
Types of Business Attires
-Casual
This is informal clothing that might be worn not only at work but outside work. This is more appropriate for fieldwork. This includes Jeans, T-shirts, Shorts, and Sneakers.
-Smart Casual
This is another form of casual attire with a stylish twist. This is more suitable for flexible offices. This includes dresses, blazers, trousers, button-down shirts, etc
-Business Casual
This is common in many workplaces. It is a good way to dress if you are unsure of the setting. It is neither too formal nor too casual. Examples are pencil skirts, blazers, shirts, blouses
-Business Professional
This is the attire for conservative offices or organizations. Tailored, well-fitted clothing falls under this category. This includes suits, ties, dresses, and skirts.
-Business Formal
This is for the most formal setting such as award ceremonies, benefits, special dinners, and events. Similar to business professional but more reserved to maintain professionalism. Examples are black- and dark-colored suits and ties, trouser suits, and skirt suits.
You cannot walk through the doors of new opportunities dressed in the costume of old chapters.
