Does self-esteem play a role in academic performance?
‘Part of mother’s strength came from a deep-seated faith in God and perhaps her innate ability to inspire Curtis and me’….Ben Carson, a pioneer in the field of neurosurgery and author of gifted hands. He gives good credence to his mother for being the earliest, strongest, and most impactful influence in his life.
Parents, mentors, teachers, or guardians who are able to positively influence, inspire or improve the self-esteem of their wards often bring out the best in them. As a young person, you can also build your self-esteem.
Research has shown that high self-esteem plays an important role in academic achievement, and social and personal responsibility (Redenbach 1991). Low self-esteem can lessen a student’s desire to learn, ability to focus, and willingness to take risks. Positive self-esteem on the other hand is a good building block for academic success and a firm foundation for learning.
Building your self-esteem as a youth;
-Recognize what you’re good at.
We’re all good at something. It could be singing, cooking, dancing, etc
-Build positive relationships.
Be with people who inspire you or bring out the best in you.
-Be kind to yourself.
Don’t be your worst critique. See the good in you.
-Learn to be assertive.
Pick up hints and tips to help you grow. Let the best of you come out.
-Start saying ‘No’.
Say no when it’s not okay with you. Don’t be pressurized to do things that are not acceptable to you.
-Give yourself a challenge.
Set yourself a goal. Achieving your goals will help to build your self-esteem.
Building the self-esteem of your wards as parents, teachers, or guardian;
Parents/guardians play a key role in building self-esteem. Words are powerful and must be used constructively. In building self-esteem, pay attention to the following;
-Focus on the positive.
-Give constructive criticism.
-Encourage them to find things they like about themselves.
-Give goal-oriented feedback based on work done.
-Focus on accomplishments and efforts rather than vague feedback.
-Set realistic expectations.
-Teach them to learn from their mistakes.
