The Power of Listening
The Power of Listening
‘No is as deaf as the man who will not listen’— Jewish Proverb
Years ago, I had a mentor who always gave me a listening ear. He would sit patiently and allow me to express my views, ideas, and thoughts. He wouldn’t say anything or offer any specific advice. He’ll just listen intently, nodding or reaffirming what I said, just to confirm understanding. In the end, he’ll ask a thought-provoking question. This will often give me the clarity I needed to move forward or take a decision on an issue.
Impactful active listening is more than hearing the words spoken. It is understanding the context in which those words were said. This includes verbal and non-verbal cues, such as tone, facial expressions, voice inflection, and body language. As a leader, mentor, coach, or guardian; listening is a skill that cannot be ignored. Listen with the intent to understand rather than the intent to respond.
When we actively listen to others, we practice mindfulness. You can impact a life by giving someone a listening ear, devoid of distractions. This is a form of empathy, understanding, and compassion.
When you win, we win!
Together we win!
