Small but Mighty
Back then in school, we had students who were nicknamed ‘small but mighty’. They were small in stature but big and strong in character. No one could bully them. I remember a roommate of mine in my university days. She was small but people bigger than her were afraid of her. She had a loud voice. She could talk with speed and had a way of getting people to sympathize with her because of her size. Anyone who was smart avoided a quarrel with her. Those who underestimated her, did so at their own peril, as she often outwitted them.
- The first moral here is that you cannot judge a man’s capabilities by his physical appearance. The outward look is not a true reflection of character or strength. For instance, pills may be small in size but very potent. You cannot take more than prescribed just because they look small.
Gideon said ‘I am the least in my father’s house’ but God referred to him as a mighty man of valour. He looked down on himself based on his status. God looked at the capabilities and potentials placed in him, and used him to deliver Israel from the Midianites, despite all odds.
David was a chubby lad and a shepherd boy. His father didn’t reckon with him and didn’t bother to send for him when Prophet Samuel came. In his father’s eyes, he was just a young boy with no experience at war. In God’s eyes, he was a man with a big heart for God, and so God picked him and made him King.
- The second moral here is that you can miss your visitation if you focus only on the outward appearance. Jesse’s father would have missed the opportunity of being the King’s father if Samuel was not sensitive to God’s leading.
Moses was a slow talker and a fugitive wanted by Pharaoh for murder. He couldn’t understand why God would want a person like him. He gave excuses why he couldn’t do his assignment. He didn’t look like the ideal leader. God overlooked his fears and doubts and used him to deliver Israel from four hundred years of captivity.
- The third moral is, ‘never look down on yourself’. You may be small in age with no experience like David; slow in speech like Moses, from a poor family like Gideon, or even small in stature like my roommate. Those things can never be a limitation to you. Free your mind from every stronghold. You have just the perfect size, look, and qualification for your assignment when you have God’s backing.
There is a deposit of greatness in you. You are born to win. Never lower your standard to think or see yourself as a failure. Rise up and shine, for ‘the race is not for the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favor to men of skill but time and chance happens to them all’. (Ecclesiastes 9:11).
