Are you talking with him or her?
I sat on my daughter’s laptop to do some work. I wanted to quickly reply to some emails. I had left mine in the office. As I sat down, I saw an email pop up on my daughters’ email. I recognized the name instantly. It was my daughter’s Sunday school teacher. What could he be writing her for?
The young man is in his twenties or thirties and my daughter is only 12. I quickly rushed to open the email. He told her family didn’t love her; they didn’t care about her…lots of things that were meant to damage her emotionally but nothing sexual. To my horror, I discovered he has sent other similar emails before.
The African mother in me rose up. I don’t know whether I flew or ran from the staircase but I sha landed in the sitting room where my daughter was. How come you kept this hidden from me? It was a day my daughter and I will never forget.
I got the church authorities involved. The young man was arrested. He had other kids in his circle that he was sending similar emails. We had to make lots of changes in my family to our kid’s communication chain on the internet, her circle of friends, and communication within the home.
Today, my daughter lives and works in the US. She runs an initiative where she teaches young children about pedophiles and how to identify them—- Mrs. Ali (Real name withheld).
A child is a gift from God, a blessing to the family, and a unique blend of husband and wife.
One vital component of child training and upbringing is communication. This role cannot be delegated to a third party. You must create time to talk and listen to your child.
How to improve communication with your Child….
