Personal Grooming in the Workplace (Success in Career Series)
While in the banking industry, I was on the panel to interview applicants for industrial training. I was amazed at how some of them dressed for the interview. It was almost as if they didn’t want the job.
Some turned up in rumpled shirts and blouses, trainers, and sandals. While it may have looked insignificant to others, it was a key criterion in this case.
There is a style for every job. For instance, the dressing of a field worker is entirely different from the dressing of a banker.
You must keep an eye on your personal grooming whatever job you are doing. Understand the dressing style for your organization. You cannot wear native wears to work if your organization requires a corporate English dressing style.
Study the pattern, adapt, and get used to it. There is nothing worse than starting a new job and looking odd in your dressing. Maybe the collar didn’t fit or you are always pulling on the hem of your skirt or straightening the tie because you are not yet used to it.
Tips for Personal Grooming in the Workplace
- Pay attention to details
- Check your shoes. Be sure they are shinned and in a good state
- Clothes pressed, clean and neat, no buttons off or ripped.
- Hair neat and clean.
- Nails are neat and clean.
- If you wear glasses, check the fitting and make sure they suit you. Renew them at the right time so you can see.
- Relax and be confident. You don’t need to keep checking yourself.
Finally, make each day as intentional as an interview day.
